The Barkworth tradition for fish supply goes back many decades; four generations having worked in the industry and we have many long standing friends.
We recently came across this archive picture from the 1960's showing "bobbers" landing kits of fresh cod and haddock. "Chuck" Wilson, seen on the left, has been a friend and customer of the Barkworth family for many years. His fish landing skills, like many other "bobbers" had to be seen to be believed. He could land a kit on the quayside with such accuracy and seemingly little effort.
This was in the heyday of Hull's home fishing fleet and fishdocks, which employed thousands of men in all types of work from fishing to transport and delivery. This picture shows a hive of activity with 19 men ashore and on board working this one vessel alone.
The younger "Saltfish" generation are getting to know their way around and here we see Saltfish Izzy (second in from the right) during a recent visit to long standing family friends of the Barkworth family over several generations and fish traders in Northern Spain.
Luis Angel (standing) is seen here cheffing at the gastronomic society in Hondarribia celebrating a family birthday, with the senior generation represented by Luis Tohal standing in the background.
Izzy was thrilled to experience life in a Spanish fishing community first-hand and loved the taste of King crab being served as one of the many courses in the typical basque country restaurant.
Saltfish Tom continues to learn the ropes in the family business of JP Barkworth with a visit to long standing customers in the beautiful northern Spanish fishing town of Hondaribbia.
Saltfish Jon said, "We have a long established relationship with a business in Hondaribbia and our families have become good friends. During a recent visit to all our Spanish customers, Saltifish Tom accompanied me and in our Hondaribbia stop off Tom and Martina, our customer's daughter took time out from their busy schedules to smile for the camera."

The Barkworth family annual fishing expedition resulted in some beautiful fresh landings especially from the youngsters!

Spare fisherman a thought.
We kiss our wives and children's tears.
As we set sail with all our fears,
Our home is now a rusty box.
As we set sail through the open locks.
A thousand miles of cruel seas,
Can bring mere mortals to their knees.
Britania may hove ruled the waves,
But where we fish we are their slaves.
With black ice, fog and under zero,
Everyman must be a hero.
Around the clock we gut the fish,
So you can have your tasty dish.
It's a smelly life no scent of heather,
As sea spray turns our skin to leather.
Why we do it, we don't know,
It's not because we love the snow.
With lots of luck and the grace of god,
We will return with all your cod.
So as you stand and watch the foam,
Please think of them that won't come home
Congratulations to Matta’s International Foods, the exotic Bold Street, Liverpool food emporium, who clinched two major prizes at last night’s Merseyside Independent Business Awards.
The family-owned business was named Merseyside Independent Business of the Year and Independent Retail Business of the Year at the second annual awards event staged by Merseyside law firm Morecrofts at the city’s Titanic Hotel. Matta’s, which opened in 1965, is credited with introducing many Merseyside palates to world tastes from areas such as Arabic Africa, the Indian sub-continent and the Caribbean.
Dalip Matta, manager, said: "It’s 30 years since we first set up shop on Bold Street. None of us quite know where the time has gone but my brother, sister, father, mother and I have always loved the business and it’s great to think that we’ve been able to widen people’s horizons about different food cultures or help them to lead a healthier lifestyle."
"My parents retire this year, so to win these two awards is a fantastic acknowledgement of everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve."
Jon Barkworth said, "It is a great honour to supply Matta's with fish and we congratulate them on their success. I echo Dalip Matta's comments; beautifully prepared fish is appetising and good for your health as part of a balanced diet and JP Barkworth is committed to supplying a wide range of fish to meet the tastes and appetites of all communities."

Saltfish Tom dropped in to see how his Dad, Saltfish Jon, is getting on with the latest tasty arrivals of exotic seafish.
"Our family has a great tradition in the fishing industry," says Jon. "My great grandfather was the first generation in the trade in the late 1800's and he would be amazed at the variety of seafish on offer today.
At home the whole family love to sit down together and enjoy the taste and choice available. We have customers up and down the land who know they can depend on Saltfish Jon for top quality supplies of their favourites!"
